finality of the semester

I have begun to realize just what my parents meant when they said that as we get older time seems to move quicker. Was it not yesterday that we just began this semester? Was I not just turning 16 and learning how to drive a car with my dad teaching me? Instead, here I sit...stressing over all that I have not completed for my last couple of weeks. There just does not seem to be enough time in the day. It is not even that what I have to complete is difficult, it is that there is soooo much of it. We have not even hit finals week and I'm stressed beyond all measure. I wish there was an easier way to finish off the semester.

advertisements

When it comes to shopping for myself, I normally am not swayed by what is popular or what advertisements I see. I usually find myself at a store and buying what I like or think will work best for me. If I am clothes shopping, I will say that seeing what is on a mannequin might influence what I buy since I can see what it looks like on a body before I try it on. When I watch TV and there are advertisements for the next popular thing, I do not run out and buy it. I listen to what others are saying about the product and decide whether or not I like it. In a way, I suppose I am influenced even though I may not be aware of it.

How do you find out if someone is telling you the truth?

In order to find out if someone is telling me the truth or not I will normally do my own mini "investigation" to find the answer. I hate being lied to and do not appreciate when I do not get a straight answer that could later cause drama if I further provide that information to someone else. So, if one of my friends were to give me an answer that seemed suspicious, I would take it upon myself to find out where they got that information. If their source is from another person that I know, I will usually ask them myself to verify that they are correct. Erroneous information has a tendency to be passed around a little too much so I feel that I need to get the story straight. I will check online for answers to statements that I find unbelievable. Knowing my source gives me confidence in my answers and furthers my trust with the person or acquaintance.

This picture is the inspiration for my ethnography. Her name is Ziva David and she is one of the main characters of the television show NCIS. Ziva is not your stereotypical Jewish woman. She has come to the United States and became part of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service to protect marines and solve murders or myseteries dealing with marines. I watch this television show probably too much but have grown to follow the characters as the story goes on. Ziva is probably one of my favorite characters on the show because she breaks the stereotypical version of Jewish women. She is strong physically and emotionally and very skilled in martial arts and using a weapon. I believe that Ziva is a good role model and a very interesting person. The more I watch this show, which is pretty much every day, the more I enjoy working on my project.

February 19, 2009

One of my favorite TV shows that I watch religiously is NCIS on USA. I do not know why this show is so interesting to me but I like the storyline. The characters on the show develop as each episode is watched; NCIS does not focus entirely the life of the characters but instead provides the viewer with just enough information to keep them wanting more. My first idea for the project for this class was to focus on race in this show. It seemed odd to me that there were no races besides caucasion on the main team of NCIS. As I developed my topic, I discovered an idea that seemed so obvious that I had missed it. One of the main characters is a woman, which is already interesting, who happens to be Jewish. She came to work for NCIS from another country where women were looked down upon and seen as the weaker sex. I found it an appealing topic to discuss since women in the United States seem to becoming more equal to men. As part of NCIS, this woman is one of the stronger team members and can be arguebaly one of the best with martial arts and weaponry. However, if stereotypical, this woman has many errors in her understanding of the English language and needs to be corrected often by her male counterparts. I find that I will have much to talk about in my project and will be able to discuss my topic quite fully.
