advertisements
When it comes to shopping for myself, I normally am not swayed by what is popular or what advertisements I see. I usually find myself at a store and buying what I like or think will work best for me. If I am clothes shopping, I will say that seeing what is on a mannequin might influence what I buy since I can see what it looks like on a body before I try it on. When I watch TV and there are advertisements for the next popular thing, I do not run out and buy it. I listen to what others are saying about the product and decide whether or not I like it. In a way, I suppose I am influenced even though I may not be aware of it.

I kind of agree. When I see a new product on t.v., I do not immediately go out and buy it, because I know other people will do that first and I can see what they think of it. However, I do feel the compulsion to buy. Take the Shamwow, for instance. I saw that infomercial time and time again, and was seriously thinking about buying it. I mean, it looked so cool! The only problem in my mind, was that, products on infomercials usually do not work (at least not as well as they say they do). I didn't know anyone who had one for the longest time, and was thinking about giving in. Then, I went over to my cousin's house for a going-away party, and there it was. I tried it. The thing didn't work as well as a real towel, let alone a papertowel! I'm glad I didn't act on my impulse.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to clothes, I don't think I'm very swayed. Maybe I'll go to the store to try something on that looks good on t.v., but if I don't like it on me, I'm not buying it. End of story.
I kinda disagree. I think that we are all really influenced by advertisements, after all they are everywhere. i was walking to my class the other day and someone had sprint embroidered on their back pack. It's unbelievable how far the media has expanded into our lives. I'm not saying that most of us go see and advertisement and go out right away to get it but say a week plus later you are out shopping you might not remember being influenced by an advertisement you say a while ago but you might remember seeing it before and that might influence your purchase. For example, when I see advertisements for shampoo or lotions I am often influenced by them if they focus on smell or use of the shampoo. I fell victim to pantene for lengths due to the beautiful long haired model on the commercial, in hopes my hair might look the same. With clothes i think it's even worse. We follow brand names like it is our job. Everyone knows designer jeans or american eagle. It isn't really about picking out what you like it's about falling victim to the brand names which everyone does wether it's meditated or not.
ReplyDeleteAh, shopping. A product's price is a persuasive ad factor. Not all products advertise their prices, but if a product is also something that costs little money, not so much clothing, I'm thinking, but more like cleaning products, I am more likely to be moved by ads. Ads that advertise people having fun, or easing life--like a Swiffer compared to a straw broom--easily sway me.
ReplyDeleteOther ad factors that influence me to buy are products that boast natural ingredients, and are environmentally-friendly. "CLEAN" products. That includes food brands--whole wheat, or no artificial flavoring added.
Diana, I have been shopping with you many, many times... the mannequin part is quite true this much I know. I remember us going to the mall a month ago and you saying that you wanted to buy the entire outfit on the mannequin. I too buy things based on what works for me or what I like. However temptation often has overcome the both of us where we throw useless crap into either our shopping cart or our hands and we opt to buy it then return it a few days later after the guilt of purchasing something so pricy or things we don't need consumes us.
ReplyDeleteVery rarely do I buy products based on their advertisements. I believe that I enjoy the commercial for a product more than I would enjoy the product itself. When you are growing up, you learn to not trust everything someone says to you. This holds true to advertisements. I am not going to trust a person I have never met to tell me what I need. I prefer to do research on products to see if they are worth the money I will be spending.

ReplyDeleteI am never influenced by advertisement because I never believe in anything I see and I don't like trying new things. So usually when I go shopping I shop for something that I know or something that someone I trust has tried and vouches for. But sometimes even then if I am not quite sure I don't buy the product. Plus on ads they make everything look perfect, they only show you the pros and never the cons, how are you supposed to take their word then when they are completely biased? Sometimes, even if I do like something off of an ad I'll convince myself that I don't just because I hate commercials :).
